Movie Review from Dcealumni.com

‘Delhi 6’ makes a cynical take on corrupt legal systems, ridicules religious norms, talks of secure social bonding in India in the old Delhi region of Chandni Chowk and depicts the zeal of life in Delhites. The movie shows, how people of different religions, caste and culture stay together although they may have differences on some issues. ‘Delhi 6’ is not a glamorous masala film with fantasy script but the film works like a realistic life story.

The film is about youngster Roshan who comes to India for the first time with his ailing grandmother who spent most of her life here .Roshan’s father hates India because he was forced to leave India after he married a Muslim girl .Roshan’s father had to flee India with his wife to escape religious extremists. Roshan’s grandmother says she doesn’t want to breathe her last on a foreign land and Roshan is happy to gets a chance to go on an adventurous trip to unknown land.

Roshan starts with watching the cows on roads and see her grandmother praising the betel leaf - pan .He watches the pigeon lining on terrace and tastes the Indian sweets jalebi in the crowded streets of Chandani Chowk .He meets uncle Beg and plays polo with him. He finds it uncomfortable to see various social structure, the troubling cops, brothers having a wall in the middle of house, a sweet girl Bittu who wants to take part in reality show Indian Idol has to secretly prepare to get her dream true as she is not allowed all the freedom to go against social rules. Roshan falls in love with Bittu and then the city is said to be under attack of some black monkey. Roshan is surprised to see all the happenings and he decides to bring about a change in system from his individual efforts.

Till the first half the movie shows characters that keep you interested. The film picks up in the initial half and you love the depiction, although you don’t find the cinematic angles and glaze in depiction but the realistic lives of different characters interpreted from the eyes of NRI Roshan, is interesting .The second half of the film drags and the monkey man story has some philosophies that are not very clear from depiction .The climax is made shocking to keep the audience interested in the movie.

The music of Delhi 6 by A.R. Rahman is best and the lead pair impress in the movie although the chemistry has not been much explored. Bittu -Sonam Kapoor stays confused throughout the film although she dreams to do big in her life. Sonam did not get much screen time and she looked good in her short screen presence .Abhishek Bachchan is ok in his role. Costumes of Sonam Kapoor make her resemble a Chandni Chowk girl but Abhishek don’t look like NRI (Shahrukh in Swades appeared NRI outwardly). The supporting casts had individual stories and Supriya Pathak, Divya Dutta, Waheeda Rehman, Rishi Kapoor, Om Puri, Atul Kulkarni and Tanvi Azmi were impressive in their roles.

The film is not a crowd puller because of low glamour and a script that is not a youth based. The opening will be ok but the collections may fall down as the week proceeds.
